JLPT N4 listening expectations

What the N4 listening section assumes and how it is tested, from the official JLPT N4 level summary and item-type documents. This is a test expectation and orientation page, not a complete listening-skills course: it tells you what to expect on the day and points to the study material that supports it. The ability target, item types and approximate counts below are official JLPT material; the learner workflow is original study advice written for this knowledge base, not an official syllabus.

What N4 listening certifies

The ability to comprehend conversations encountered in daily life and generally follow their contents, provided they are spoken slowly. N4 measures basic Japanese "mainly learned in class". Speech is slower than at higher levels and the topics are everyday — the vocabulary and grammar of the N4 study set are the assumed base.

What the listening section contains

Four item types, 28 items total (approximate official counts). Audio is played once. What is printed vs heard differs by item type (from the official N4 samples):

• Task-based comprehension and Comprehension of key points: the answer options are printed in the test booklet; you read them before the audio.
• Verbal expressions: an illustration is printed; the expressions themselves are only heard.
• Quick response: neither the prompt nor the options are printed — both are heard.

There is no item type where you answer from audio alone while the printed options stay unused: follow each item type's booklet instructions.

N4 has no Comprehension of general outline (that starts at N3) and no Integrated comprehension (N1/N2 only) — the listening workload here is concrete, information-focused tasks on daily-life speech.

What language knowledge supports it

The N4 vocabulary batches provide the everyday words the conversations use, and the N4 grammar page covers the sentence patterns heard in the audio, including the polite and spoken forms N4 listening relies on. Because Tanos describes the N4 lists as NON-CUMULATIVE (designed to exclude N5 material, though a few characters and headwords overlap in practice), review the N5 kanji and N5 vocabulary pages as the prerequisite base.

Learner workflow

A suggested route through this knowledge base (original study advice, not an official JLPT syllabus): build the word base with the N4 vocabulary batches, then the N4 grammar page for the sentence patterns, then practise with the official item types using the sample questions with audio and the Official Practice Workbooks listed on the question types overview.

The JLPT does not test speaking or writing
