Core particle functions

Particles mark grammatical roles and link words. They never change form. This page is the canonical reference for the particles the N5 grammar inventory uses; individual patterns link here instead of repeating the explanations.

Topic は vs subject が

The classic N5 distinction:

  • は marks what the sentence is about (topic), often given information.
  • が marks the grammatical subject, often new information, and is required with the predicates 好き, 嫌い, 上手, 下手, 欲しい, できる, 分かる, and with existence (いる/ある): 猫がいる.

Both can appear in one sentence: 私は猫が好きです (as for me, cats are liked).

に vs で for location

  • に = static location / existence / destination: 庭に猫がいます。
  • で = location where an action happens: 公園で遊びます。
